New LVA-PW Board Elected

Literacy Volunteers of America-Prince William, Inc. (LVA-PW) is pleased to announce the newly elected LVA-PW Board of Directors. Elected Board Officers are: President-George Kerr; Vice-President-Ken Ikeda; Treasurer-Barbara Ball; and Secretary-Patti Beattie. Rounding out the Board of Directors are: Lynn Kerr, Cynthia Schell, John Haneklau, Tracy Walker, Joanna Crutchley, Jim Caddigan, and Bob Orazi.

Change a Life and Become a Tutor!

Would you like to become a volunteer literacy tutor and help an adult in your community learn to read? Then sign up for the next Tutor Training Workshop (TTWS)!

We are a non-profit serving Prince William County. We offer free tutoring to adults who seek to improve their literacy skills. If you would like to become a volunteer literacy tutor, you must attend both training sessions of a TTWS to become a certified literacy tutor.

There is a one-time $35.00 registration fee which covers professional training and certification, textbook and other workshop materials. LVA-PW on "Communicating Today"!

LVA-PW was invited to appear on John Monsul's "Communicating Today" television show on Channel 10-Fairfax County TV. Executive Director Kim Sells, LVA-PW founder Dona Swanson, and board member/tutor Ken Ikeda represented LVA-PW for the taping of the show. The 30-minute show about LVA-PW also aired on Verizon Cable Channel 10. We hope to have a copy of the program available for viewing in the near future.

Ice Cream Social a Great Success!

On June 2, LVA-PW hosted our Annual Ice Cream Social! This event was hosted by our Board of Directors, and was a time to celebrate the accomplishments of our tutors and students!!! Every year, we give awards for Tutor of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Student of the Year. This year, we had multiple winners in each category! Congratulations to the following winners:

Tutor of the Year: Barbara Leigh and Marley Richards

Volunteer of the Year: Lynn Kerr and Tracy Walker

Student of the Year: Juan, Nelson, and Ricky.

Thank you to all of the Board members and attendees for a wonderful evening! Thank you to ALL of our volunteers and students for a successful and productive year at LVA-PW!

LVA-PW Featured as a "Friday's Hero" on Channel 9!

LVA-PW was selected as a "Friday's Hero" for WUSA9 in DC. This is quite an honor! The segment featured interviews with a tutor, a student, and our Executive Director, Kim Sells. This was a great opportunity to highlight our organization, our volunteers, and our adult learners! Welcome our new tutors!

LVA-PW Welcomes New Volunteer Tutors! The last Tutor Training Workshop, conducted May 22 and June 5, was attended by 13 new volunteer tutors. LVA-PW welcomes and congratulates the following volunteers for giving of their time to share the gift of reading:

Inkjet Cartridges

Don't throw away your printer inkjet cartridges. Donate them to us. We will recycle them and receive discounts on our office supplies. Your help is appreciated!
