How to Get Involved

LVA is a non-profit organization that offers free tutoring to adults in the Woodbridge area. Tutors do not need prior experience. We will train you at our Tutor Training Workshops, which are held quarterly. The first session is held on a Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the follow-up session is held a few weeks later on a Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. There is a one-time $30.00 registration fee which covers your text book and other workshop materials. Lunch is also provided. We have American and foreign born students. Some prefer one-on-one tutoring while others are in small classes of three to five students. The day and time that the tutor and student meet is determined by both. Typically, the tutor/student match meets once a week for up to two hours. Once you complete the Tutor Training Workshop you will be assigned a student, usually within one month. The office staff is available to give you continuous support with your tutoring needs. The first step is to contact us (703)670-5702 and register for an upcoming Tutor Training Workshop!

Tutors Are Needed!

LVA-PW has a waiting list of adult learners that needs tutors.
Current tutors, can you tutor an additional learner?
Can you turn your one-on-one session into a small group?
If so, please call us at 703-670-5702 and discuss the possibilities!

Tutor Advice

  • There is a wealth of resource information online. We have listed many websites which you can surf through by clicking on the Tutor Links tab to the left of this screen.
  • The LVA staff is here to help! We have a library with curriculum that tutors can check out for their students. Come and see!
  • Be patient, remember to stay focused on the student's needs, objectives and means of success rather than your own. Be patient, be patient, be patient!
  • Find out specifically what your student needs and focus on those things.
  • Be confident and know that all education is a step-by-step, week-by-week, endeavor.
  • Be patient and listen to what the learner really wants from each session.
  • Be flexible and search until you find materials that are of interest to your student.
  • It may be hard not to impose your own goals on your students. They must be allowed to set their own pace,it may not be your pace.

If you have any recommendations, comments, requests, links, etc about this website, please email webmaster@lvapw.org.
